New England College mandates meningitis vaccine

This year, New England College joined the ranks of just 13 other colleges and universities throughout the country that have made it mandatory for that all incoming students be vaccinated for meningitis B. According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 2,600 people in the United States contract meningococcal disease each year and 10 to 15 percent will die of it.

Meningococcal outbreak declared at San Diego State University

With three meningococcal disease cases among San Diego State University undergraduates since June, the county public health department on Friday declared an outbreak on campus. Announcing the decision in Montezuma Hall just before lunch, officials said all three students have been infected by the “B” type of the meningococcal bacteria that can cause deadly meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

SDSU student hospitalized with meningococcal meningitis

San Diego State University student was being treated in a hospital Wednesday after being diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis, university officials said. The SDSU case is the eighth reported case of meningococcal disease in San Diego County this year, county health officials said. On average, 10 cases have been reported annually over the past five years.

EDITORIAL: Vaccines for deadly diseases, like meningitis B, should be required by Penn State

A lot of people agree it’s a no- brainer to get yourself vaccinated. However, there are still people who refuse to get proper vaccines citing it as causing other health issues or interfering with their religious beliefs. This can cause tension between people who do not want to be vaccinated and institutions that require it in order to work or study. Despite this, Penn State currently has a list of vaccines required by the university as well as a list of, not required, but strongly recommended.
