Rutgers experiencing meningitis B outbreak

“People in the at-risk populations above who have not previously received a MenB vaccine should receive the first dose as soon as possible,” the email stated.

SUMMARY

The specimens of the two meningitis B cases for Rutgers undergraduates have been found to have identical genes after special testing done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), according to a University email sent to the Rutgers community. 

“While we cannot predict whether there will be additional cases of meningococcal disease on campus, having two cases occurring over a short time with genetically related organisms suggests that there is an outbreak associated with Rutgers University—New Brunswick,” the email stated. 

The University email strongly recommended members of the Rutgers community get the serogroup B meningococcal vaccine, especially the following at-risk populations: all current and incoming undergraduates, including transfers, and all graduate students who live in undergraduate residence halls.
